It is not high temperature resistant but can be used on surfaces that have no more than a silver-dollar size rust spot. The RustSeal step is necessary if rust prevention is important before applying a standard paint. The kit comes with enough KLEAN product since it is diluted 5:1. The RustSeal product doesn't store well if exposed to air, so it is recommended to use all of it at once.
