However, the build quality of this honing rod is underwhelming for its price. There are issues with the angled guard and handle, which jiggle and rotate with about 10 degrees of play. The wood dye does not go all the way to the guard and does not match the color and sheen of the Shun classic chef's knife. Additionally, some customers were disappointed to find that the product is made in China, despite being advertised as made in Japan. Despite these flaws, the honing steel performs well and effectively sharpens knives.
