- Are you asking what the Case Book is?' said Hanshici as he began his speech. 'We detectives would forward the information we obtained to the City Magistrates' Court. The chief inspector or deputy judge responsible for the case would also record this information in a notebook. We used to call this notebook Case Notebook.'Known as the pioneer of Japanese detective stories, Kido Okamoto created the character of Detective Hanshici in 1917, which would bring him great fame, and also laid the foundations of a new genre - historical detective story - in Japanese literature. The character of Detective Hanshici, also known as the Sherlock Holmes of Japanese literature, was a great success and continued as a series that attracted attention for twenty years.Cats taking over a town, people disappearing, and murders that are hard to solve. Detective Hanshici solves many intricate, unusual and mysterious events decorated with interesting details, relying more on his instincts, experiences and sometimes even his luck. While solving the events, he examines life in feudal Japan from the perspective of the period between the First and Second World Wars, the period in which it was written, sometimes using humor elements.
