Tüm kuşlar, padişahı bulmak için çıkacakları yolculukta Süleyman Peygamber'in sırdaşı hüthüdü kendilerine rehber olarak seçerler. Hüthüt onları Kaf Dağı'nın arkasında yaşayan padişahları Simurg'a götürecektir. Fakat seyahatin zahmetli ve tehlikeli olduğunu anlayan kuşlar farklı konularda hüthüde sorular sorarak mazeret beyan etmeye ve yola çıkmaktan vazgeçmeye çalışır. Hüthüt ise ibretlik hikayeler ve kıssalar anlatarak onları ikna etmeyi deneyecektir. Simurg'a giden yol, er kişinin yoludur; zira hakikate varacaktır.İnsanın hakikat arayışını alegorik bir anlatımla dile getiren Mantıku't-tayr, tasavvuf edebiyatının en seçkin örneklerinden biridir. İranlı meşhur sufi Feridüddin Attar'ın şaheserinin Türkçeye farklı dönemlerde farklı çevirileri yapılmıştır. Yunus Emre'nin çağdaşı Gülşehri'nin çevirisi ise en otantik örneklerden biridir.
